There seem to be more and more websites around these days that have a video of a person pop up as soon as you arrive at the site. Without any request from you they begin talking to you. Due to my job I spend a lot of time online and I have some feedback for all the sites which do this: DON’T!!!!
Is it so hard to use a “Play” button? If I want to listen to it, I’ll press the button. I have two standard reactions to these sites. Usually when browsing the web I am working and will have my PC’s speakers switched off. So when I find one of these websites I can’t hear what the message is saying anyway. I’m not going to turn on my speakers as you’ve already annoyed me and I’ve missed the start of the message anyway.
If my PC’s speakers are switched on I am usually either in a phone call or listening to music. Either way if someone rudely starts to talk over the top I find the quickest way to stop it is to close that browser window. The result being that I don’t hear the message either.
Welcome people with text. Give the option of a vocal message IF the visitor chooses it. Don’t just start talking at us whether we’ve asked you to or not.
