The RSPCA in New South Wales, Australia, are taking two contestants from the show “I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here” to court for animal cruelty. Apparently the two were hungry as their rations had been reduced so they killed, cooked and ate a rat.
Now I cannot be the only person who thinks this is totally ridiculous. The rat wasn’t killed for fun, they didn’t torture it. I’m guessing they didn’t taunt it then stand laughing over it’s murdered corpse? They killed it because they wanted to eat it. I’ve seen quite a few animals killed for food on television. But regardless of all that the thing I cannot get away from is it’s a rat!!
There are shops around here which, quite legally, sell poison and traps for killing rats. They don’t ask why I might want to kill a rat. It’s generally accepted that rats are not in any way endangered and can be a problem. There are businesses which specialise in killing rats, just like they kill wasps, ants, mice etc.
Will there be an inquest if someone kills a fly on television if there is a risk they did it as part of a performance instead of necessity? Watch out President Obama! (Was the fly a risk to you or did you kill it as a political stunt? View the evidence and decide for yourself: video)
Would there have been any problem if the contestants had killed and eaten a chicken on the show?
